2010 ESCAPE THE ROCK WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Council Rock South High School
Holland, PA

The Council Rock South High School and the Council Rock South Wrestling Booster Club are proud to present the fifth annual Escape the Rock Wrestling Tournament, a 24 team, individual competition, with the top eight wrestlers in each weight class receiving awards. This includes a custom Championship Belt for the winner of each weight class. Wrestling is set to begin at 3pm on Friday, January 8, 2010, with the finals scheduled for 5:30pm on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Many college coaches will be in attendance. We are happy to announce that former NCAA Champion and current University of North Carolina Head Coach, C.D. Mock will be presenting our awards. Coach Mock is also a Council Rock High School alumnus, where he was a PIAA State Champion.

Our inaugural event in December of 2005 was a 10 team, dual meet tournament that culminated with the perennial Pennsylvania powerhouse Easton Red Rovers downing the host Council Rock South Golden Hawks 37-24 in what was a very exciting final. In January of 2007, the event was expanded to 24 teams and became an individual tournament. Paulsboro and Council Rock South waged a great battle for team honors with the hosts coming out on top. Our 2008 event was also a huge success, with newcomer and national prep power Wyoming Seminary taking the team title. The 2009 Escape the Rock proved to be the best yet, with Central Mountain coming away with the team title in a close battle with 2008 team champion Wyoming Seminary. Eventual 2009 PA state champion Andrew Alton from Central Mountain, was voted the Outstanding Wrestler while posting three pins and a major decision on his way to the 140 pound title. Jim Tersigna of Phillipsburg earned the Most Falls award. The 2009 event featured 3 eventual State Champions, 43 state place winners, 89 state qualifiers, 3 National Prep Champions and 11 National Prep place winners. Congratulations to all of those wrestlers! Many of the teams also enjoyed post-season success in 2009. Team champion Central Mountain was 3rd at the PA AAA state tournament and finished 4th at the PA AAA state duals. Council Rock South repeated as district and region tournament champions. Wyoming Seminary was the PA prep state tournament champion and the National Prep tournament runner-up. Hazleton also repeated as district champion. Across the river in New Jersey, Paulsboro won the NJ Group 1 state dual championship, while Phillipsburg won NJ Group 3 state dual championship. Down in Delaware, Sussex Central finished top four in the DE Division I state dual tournament and Hodgson Vo-Tech repeated as their conference champion and was the DE Division II state dual runner-up.

This year’s tournament has three teams listed in the Amateur Wrestling News Prep 40 preseason ranking: Wyoming Seminary at #4, Central Mountain at #7 and Council Rock South at #29. There are also many individuals that are nationally ranked in various publications, including Central Mountain’s Jordan Rich (#16 at 135), the Alton twins, Andrew (#1 at 145) and Dylan (#1 at 152) and Zach Corl (#20 at 285); Wyoming Seminary’s Dominick Malone (#13 at 112), Simon Kitzis (#7 at 135) and Mike McMullen (#4 at 285); Council Rock South’s Josh Dziewa (#1 at 135); Council Rock North’s Jamie Callender (#7 at 215); Sussex Central’s Codey Combs (#17 at 145); and Paulsboro’s Joe Duca (#12 at 125) and Zach Greenwald (#12 at 215).
